A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese cars, and staff have been instructed to avoid talking about classified matters in any cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
This announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
This wider defence situation underscores the importance of robust measures and vigilance in every aspects of official activities, from vehicle use to communication habits.
